Recording studio blog

Published on February 28, 2006

PAS/CAL has updated their blog again.  The beds are done and now they are going to overdub.  They make beautiful music, I have their files in constant rotation in my player.
No studio clock watching in the 21st century.  Just creating.
Hopefully they will post more photos of what they are doing.

RTM (read the manual or book in this case)

Published on February 27, 2006

Just got this book in the mail.  Wow, it explains fairly complex procedures in a way that I can understand!  Something the 300 + page manual for my Otari can’t do.
I’m no book-learner but this one will come in handy.  It is geared towards idiots / maniacs / weirdos / luddites like myself that have big […]

Have you seen the wind??

Published on February 24, 2006

The lure of more tracks has driven me to diversion.  In December of ’05 I purchased a Otari MX-70 1” 16 track.  A wonderful piece of technology from the 1980’s, or so I thought….
When the machine was purchased I guess I wasn’t through enough in testing / evaluation of the deck.  The heads looked marvelous […]

Studio blues - a novel

Published on February 22, 2006

So around 6 months ago my wife and I decided that we had to move out of the downtown of the city we live in (Ottawa), and up into the rolling hills north of the city.  We moved to a lovely, low-impact house in the super-duper, quasi-bohemian town of Wakefield, QC.  We love it up […]

Pravda!

Published on February 20, 2006

So I took a look at my Oktava’s this weekend and was happy to see that the logo had a little relief to it as opposed to being silk screened.  They are the real deal!  Thanks to Michael Joly for his informative article and correspondance.
Though I was thinking…  I like the sound of the microphones and […]

Russian to get modded

Published on February 17, 2006

As I have mentioned before in a previous post (Fake Russian Microphones, Oh My!) I have a pair of Oktava 319 large diaphram condensers.
I have corresponded with Michael Joly about getting these modified.  Michael does some modifications to the microphones electronics and the actual body of the microphone.  He has run some test and provided […]

Published on February 15, 2006

Holy crap!
Soma Studios is selling their Neotek. If you don’t know who/what that is… they are a very influential studio out of Chicago. They main engineer / producer is a fellow named John McEntire. He also happens to play drums in a band called Tortise and has produced countless albums I listen […]

PAS/CAL blog update

Published on February 14, 2006

It seems the guitarist has flown to join the band for their sessions.
http://pascalstudio.blogspot.com/
In one of the pictures you can see an old Gibson amp mic’ed up, and they mention using a Harmony hollowbody. I can attest to the breaking up sound they mention.
It is one of the most lovely guitar sounds to my ears. […]

Recording studio blog

Published on

Here is another recording studio blog:
http://analogelectric.livejournal.com/
It is from a recording studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota called AnalogElectric, run by a fellow named Adam Lazlo Rutkowski.  The studio looks lovely.  A nice D & R Orion console, a Otari MTR90 2” and Nuendo.  What else could you want?
The blog is really good and informative.  Lots of technical […]

Fake Russian microphones, oh my!

Published on February 13, 2006

I have read about this phenomenon recently and came across this interesting article:
http://www.oktavamod.com/fake319.html
I have a pair of 319’s, but I bought them a while ago so I think I’m safe. I’ll have to check this coming weekend. On a side note, the Oktava mods offered on this site look very interesting. I […]
