PAS/CAL recording blog

This is the blog of the recording of an album by the Detroit band PAS/CAL:

The music is sweet, rock and rollicking pop with all the right ingredients. The 2 ’singles’ ‘What Happened to the Sands’ and ,’The Bronze Beached Boys (Come On Let’s Go)’ available for download from the band website (http://www.pascalgoespop.com/) sound great. Great arrangements, instrumentation and the sound quality is top notch.

Their blog is a look into the process of recording, circa ‘06. They have built themselves a one-room, garage studio (Romantic Air Workshoppe) and are capturing the sounds with a mixture of analog and digital technology. By evidence of the afore-mentioned songs, they are getting the mix right.

If you browse through the blog you can see images and read explanations of Casimer Pascal’s (who I gather is the main recordist) various techniques. He uses one of my favorites, the bass drum microphone on the beater side on to capture the click of the beater hitting the head. Plus, they also include an entry from a guitarist in NYC, it seems they are doing cross-country, file sharing – as a 1” analog owner, I am jealous of the ease at which they can do that. Various other technical minutia is discussed. It’s a great read for anyone interested in the non-traditional studio aesthetic.
