Studio blues - a novel

So around 6 months ago my wife and I decided that we had to move out of the downtown of the city we live in (Ottawa), and up into the rolling hills north of the city.  We moved to a lovely, low-impact house in the super-duper, quasi-bohemian town of Wakefield, QC.  We love it up their.

This move necessitated me finding a new spot for my recording setup.

We had been in that house for a few years and I had been successful in setting up a good little basement studio running a Teac 80-8 and a Tascam M512.  The setup worked wonderfully and things sounded great.

When I mentioned my impending move to my friend Jason he offered up the use of a room in his barn.  Great!  The room is a good size for a one room studio.  8 foot ceilings, about 15 across and about 25 deep.  Not perfect, but based on this design, good for a one room set-up like mine.  We built some corner filled basstraps, had plans for using bamboo rugs as primary reflections point diffusion and had 2 mid/hi traps built for the ceiling, one for over the drums and one for over the mix position.  Room is sounding good / feeling good, got the gear set-up – let’s start recording!!!!

Wait…..  then this happened to us…….  and this…….

We are still struggling to recover.   More next time….
